The gear is made of metal, unfortunately, over time the teeth may wear out. Worn gears may not spin at the proper RPM, if it spins at all, so replacing the gear will help bring the mixer\'s performance to like-new levels. This part is sold as an individual item. Please refer to the owner\'s manual and diagrams of your model to ensure the proper installation. Note, when replacing this part, to help reduce friction, planetary grease is required.

Grinding noise and wouldn't spin.

I removed one screw from rear trim that exposed four more to be able to get into the mixer. Then removed four more screws to get into the grease case that holds the gear assembly. Removing the "pin" requires a special pliers and there's no way around it. I went to auto parts and was recommended one that had adjustable tips ($11.99) but found out the tips were just a little too large to catch the "pin holes". This is the only step that took me hours to complete. After trying to file down the tips it showed to be working but still didn't have the pressure enough to release the pin. I used a screwdriver and pliers to carefully push the pin in an upward direction to remove the pin and be able to remove the broken down gear.
I removed the pin finally after struggling for two hours. I cleaned and removed all the old grease and replaced the gear and replaced the new gear and new grease and seal. After sealing it back, mixer worked like a champ again.
I exchanged the pliers for a better quality set (19.99) and will be repairing our second mixer, the pin came off in less than 5 seconds with the right pliers.

Replaced worm follower gear, cleaned all of the old grease from gears and housing and replaced with new grease. Re-assembled and mixer works fine. There is a video on u-tube explaining and showing how to dis-assemble and assemble the mixer and what could be wrong. Step by step instructions, very helpful. ( kitchen aid 600 pro mixer repair).

1. Removed the transmission cover.
2. Removed all gears and the spindles.
3. Cleaned the entire unit of all grease and ground metal from the broken gear.
4. Replaced all items including the new gear and greased everything.
5. Installed the cover and tested. All was good. Parts were shipped quickly.

It is very easy repair. first you take off the cover then take off the gear box cover. After you remove snap ring the gears slide off. The hardest part is cleaning off all the old grease so you don't have slivers of metal from bad parts ruining the new parts. Just put together in reverse order. If you use the mixer a lot, and mix dough or things heavy you'll be doing this more than once. To make it last longer use on low speed, maybe #2.
